Pastor’s eNote: Weekly Update

Last week’s fires in California, which are still ongoing, will permanently reshape the area. Friends and colleagues in the area tell me about how this situation seems so much larger than the Northridge Earthquake in 1994 and even the Watts riots in the 1960s. There seems to be a resigned sense that these fires signal a new normal.

Across the globe, we see the relentless signs of climate change as an expression of our poor stewardship of the planet. I recognize that for some this topic may touch a political nerve. To be honest, I am not sure why any effort to better care for the Earth and our own existence creates controversy. Surely the human and global consequences of our time should awaken us as Jesus’ followers.

The Scriptures are replete with references of how the natural order reveals the greatness of God. Our experiences in nature, especially here in the Pacific Northwest, confirm this truth of the Bible. All the Earth reveals the greatness of God. Thanks and praise be to God!

Ultimately, what is at stake for us as Jesus followers is what God is doing in the world. God comes into this world in Jesus. All is valuable, important, and loved. Important. Our care for each other in the church, people not in the church yet, and this very creation should continue to be core to our mission in the world. Everything that exists matters to God since it will be redeemed.

May we ever hold to this vision of life and what is sacred. May we each take steps this week to care for the planet, one another, and even ourselves. May God be glorified in all.

Grace to You All,
