Scott Higbee

Sanctuary Worship Director

Scott has been attending First Free since about 2001, becoming a member in 2015. During most of his time here he has participated in music ministry, both in the choir and as a trombonist. He feels very privileged to have taken on the role of Sanctuary Worship Director in May 2023 and is blessed by—and thankful for—the dedicated musicians at FFMC, and the congregation’s appreciation of all types of music.

A Seattle native and graduate of Nathan Hale High School, Scott received a degree in music education from St. Olaf College in Minnesota, and a masters degree in trombone performance from the University of Washington. His mom was also a life-long church musician, beginning as a teenager playing organ at her church in small-town North Dakota, singing in the famed St. Olaf Choir, and serving as an organist at churches in North Seattle and Ballard, as well as having been a substitute organist at First Free. Scott’s dad was from Iowa and was a professor in the Department of Humanistic Social Studies at UW, his teaching area focusing on human rights.

Scott has been a school band instructor for over twenty years and absolutely loves teaching. He also plays trombone in the Edmonds-based Cascade Symphony Orchestra and has done freelance work around the region, including a long association with the Seattle Gilbert & Sullivan Society. When not doing things musical, Scott likes to hike, travel and play golf, stresses about fifth position on the trombone, and spends much time fretting about the Huskies’ defensive line.
