Pastor’s eNote: Weekly Update

This Sunday we begin a new worship series called “Worthy: The Value of Jesus” which explores the truth of our one true king and leader, Jesus. With the November election approaching and a nation divided about the future of its presidential leadership, this series reminds us to affirm that Jesus alone is worthy of our true allegiance and loyalty.

This election has mixed politics and religion in unexpected ways. Christian Nationalism is now a distinguishing part of the American political landscape. Candidates for office find churches and other religious organizations who closely align to their policies and worldview to leverage them for their respective causes. While some of these practices have been with us for a time, there are now novel forms in which church and state are mingled.

We are reminded that Jesus stepped into the political discussions of his day with a profound sense of clarity. Matthew 22:21 tells us of Jesus’ direction on paying taxes, “Then pay to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s; and to God the things that are God’s.” While many teachings (and sermons!) can emerge from this text, what is clear is that God demands an allegiance like no other.

This is what our worship series is all about. Jesus is our true leader, savior, and Lord. How we follow him in this polarized age can be a true witness of His love and grace should we not be caught up in the political fever sweeping the land.

We would do well to remember John Wesley’s advice for those members of his societies (churches) who were preparing to vote in the upcoming election. His journal entry from October 6, 1774 reads as follows:

“I met those of our society who had votes in the ensuing election, and advised them,
1. To vote, without fee or reward, for the person they judged most worthy;
2. To speak no evil of the person they voted against; and
3. To take care their spirits were not sharpened against those that voted on the other side.”

Over these next six weeks may we maintain a heart of grace and love toward all as we center on Jesus, who alone is worthy of our loyalty and love.

Grace to You All,
