Pastor’s eNote: Weekly Update

The Son

Worship serves a variety of purposes in the life of any church. Ralph P. Martin says that to worship God is to “ascribe God supreme worth.” After all, the focus and vision of worship is on the Lord!

Worship is also a tool for our discipleship and growth as believers. Even the liturgical calendar we use is a way of “re-telling” the Jesus story each year. We begin the year with the stories preceding Jesus’ birth in Advent followed by his Nativity in Christmas. From there we walk through his baptism, the visitation of the Magi, his teaching on the Kingdom leading toward his transfiguration.

Our journey toward Holy Week begins shortly thereafter with Ash Wednesday, Lent, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and ultimately Easter. We celebrate the resurrection for 50 days before the remembrance of the coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. During the remaining weeks of the year, we focus on a variety of subjects in the Christian life through Ordinary Time.

The Sunday before Advent begins is the last Sunday of the church’s year before we start telling the Jesus story over again. We call that Sunday “Christ the King” Sunday. Our focus on is on the position of Jesus as Lord and His reign over all things. This Sunday is Christ the King Sunday.

I look forward to Pastor Camille’s message about Jesus as we begin a new worship series called “The Son.” For next several weeks our attention will be on our relationship with Jesus. May you meet Him as King this week.

Grace to You All,

Pastor Craig Brown
